Closing the Outdoor Pools
At the discretion of supervisory staff, the outdoor pools may be closed due to the following weather related conditions:
If lightning or thunder is present or pending
If a Severe Storm Warning has been issued
If rain, hail, wind or any other weather condition presents a safety concern
If the swim center experiences a power outage
If there is low attendance due to weather conditions such as low temperatures
Lightning & Thunder
In the event of thunder and/or lightning, the outdoor pool will be evacuated and closed immediately. Guests must leave the pool deck and seek shelter in the restrooms, a picnic shelter or their vehicle. The pool will remain closed until 30 minutes after the last sighting of lightning.
The outdoor pool can be open during rain, but must be closed immediately if the lifeguards are unable to see the main drain at any time. The pool will reopen once visibility is restored.
During a tornado warning all outdoor pool users will asked to go take shelter in their respective restrooms.
Pool staff will announce weather-related pool closures in the following ways:
Email alerts sent to season pass holders
Facebook and Twitter alerts through the James City County Facebook and Twitter accounts
No refunds will be issued for pool closures due to inclement weather regardless of size of group or time spent in facility. Guests may request a return visit pass from pool staff.
